The Illustrated London News 1917
The Russian Revolution of 1917 marked the overthrow of the Tsarist autocracy and the establishment of the world's first communist state.
Beginning with the February Revolution, widespread protests and strikes due to food shortages
and dissatisfaction with Tsar Nicholas II's rule led to his abdication and the formation of a provisional government.
In October, the Bolshevik Party, led by Vladimir Lenin, seized power in Petrograd in the October Revolution.
This event sparked a civil war between the Bolshevik "Reds" and anti-Bolshevik "Whites," which lasted until 1922.
This was characterized by brutal fighting and foreign intervention.
Despite challenges, the Bolsheviks, under Lenin's leadership, consolidated power, instituting sweeping reforms like land redistribution and nationalization of industry.
These changes culminated in the formation of the Soviet Union in 1922, a federal socialist state comprising multiple republics.
Lenin's death in 1924 led to a power struggle within the Bolshevik Party, resulting in Joseph Stalin's rise to power and the establishment of a totalitarian regime.
The Russian Revolution had profound consequences, transforming Russia's political, social, and economic landscape and shaping the course of world history.
